Meta "personal superintelligence" vision
+ Showrunner, the Netflix of AI
July 31, 2025 |
Good morning, AI enthusiasts. Mark Zuckerberg just shared Meta's ambitious plan for "personal superintelligence" that empowers individuals rather than automating away their work.
Could this represent the biggest philosophical shift in AI development since ChatGPT launched?

META
Zuck unveils Meta's personal AI superintelligence plan
Recaply: Mark Zuckerberg shared Meta's vision for widespread "personal superintelligence," emphasizing individual empowerment over the industry trend of centralized AI systems that automate work.
Key details:
AI systems are beginning to show signs of self-improvement, making superintelligence achievable.
Meta believes people should direct AI toward their personal values and aspirations.
Smart glasses technology will serve as the main interface for personal AI assistants.
AI will know users deeply by observing their daily context and interactions continuously.
New superintelligence lab led by former Scale AI founder focuses on this personal approach.
Aggressive talent recruitment from major tech companies supports this ambitious goal.
Why it matters: While other companies build AI to replace jobs, Meta's approach could give individuals unprecedented personal capabilities. This fundamental difference in philosophy may determine whether AI empowers or displaces people.
FABLE
Fable launches Showrunner, the Netflix of AI
Recaply: San Francisco startup Fable just launched Showrunner, an AI platform that lets anyone create TV episodes with simple text prompts. Amazon backed the company in their latest funding round.
Key details:
Users can generate animated scenes or full episodes by typing descriptions.
Platform launches with two shows: "Exit Valley" (Silicon Valley satire) and "Everything Is Fine".
Currently free during alpha testing, will cost creators $10-20 monthly later.
Powered by Fable's SHOW-2 AI model, focuses on animated content.
Users can insert themselves as characters in existing shows.
Plans revenue sharing so creators earn when others remix their content.
Why it matters: Showrunner represents a shift from AI as a production tool to AI as an entertainment medium. If successful, it could transform how we consume content from passive viewing to active creation and participation.
AI CYBERATTACKS
LLMs can now autonomously hack systems
Recaply: Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, working with AI firm Anthropic, have shown that large language models (LLMs) can now plan and carry out complex AI cyberattacks on their own. The AI successfully copied the famous 2017 Equifax data breach without any human help, signaling a new era of security threats.
Key details:
The project simulated the 2017 Equifax breach, which compromised the data of around 147 million customers.
A special toolkit called "Incalmo" was developed to turn the AI's high-level plans into real computer commands.
The LLM acted as the strategic planner, while other automated agents handled technical steps like scanning for weak spots.
In a separate test of 10 smaller networks, the AI was able to steal sensitive data from nine of them.
Researchers are concerned about how quickly and cheaply these autonomous attacks can be launched.
Current security systems that rely on human operators may not be fast enough to stop these machine-speed attacks.
Why it matters: This research shows a major shift in cybersecurity threats. AI is no longer just a tool for hackers but can be the hacker itself. It highlights an urgent need to develop new, automated defense systems that can fight back at the same speed as these autonomous AI cyberattacks.
AI RESEARCH
Virtual AI lab transforms how science gets done
Recaply: Researchers at Stanford Medicine just developed a "virtual lab" staffed entirely by AI agents. This team of virtual scientists collaborates to solve complex biological problems, and in its first test, it designed a promising new nanobody-based approach for a COVID-19 vaccine in just a few days.
Key details:
The system uses an AI "principal investigator" that assembles a team of specialist AI agents.
For its first project, the AI team included an immunologist, a computational biologist, and a machine learning agent.
The lab also includes a "critic" agent designed to challenge ideas and find potential flaws.
Given the task of creating a better COVID-19 vaccine, the AI team proposed using nanobodies, which are smaller and easier to model than traditional antibodies.
The AI-designed nanobody was successfully created and tested in a real-world lab, where it proved stable and effective at binding to the virus.
The study detailing the virtual scientists was published in the journal Nature.
Why it matters: This approach represents a major leap for AI in research. Instead of just answering questions, these AI systems can now proactively collaborate, form hypotheses, and design solutions. This use of virtual scientists could dramatically accelerate the pace of scientific discovery across many different fields.
